The Bottom Line:
Using the True Temper long handled Dandelion Weeder I can remove some of those dratted dandelions while I am standing upright.
True Temper® Deluxe Dandelion Weeder having a 36 inch wooden handle, chrome ferrule and 1.5 blue metal blade area measuring about 8 inches in length is a dandy tool for digging out weeds including dandelions.
I have long found dandelions with their robust, long fleshy root system, prove to be a true irritation to try to get out of lawns, planting beds or wherever. This is especially true if they are allowed to get a real toehold in the yard. I have used a short handled version of the weed remover for years in my effort to divest myself of dandelions. Mowing over the plants does little more than encourage them. I have found that nothing other than digging them out individually at the base of the plant where it is attached to the root actually removes the dandelion plant.
Dandelion growth is low, at ground level, flower buds appear as tiny, hard, round buds only to open as a petaled yellow flower which suddenly thrusts upward, becomes a head of blow away seeds which can travel all over yard, pasture and into everything. I am convinced every seed germinates to begin the process again.
Using the True Temper long handled Dandelion Weeder I can remove some of those dratted dandelions while I am standing upright. Crawling around on the ground with a short handled weeder in hand, while it is expedient, is not pretty, moreover it is down right back breaking tiring. Being able to dig out at least a part of the weeds with the longer handled model is easier especially for those having arthritis. I like that the longer handle offers added force for getting the whole plant broken from the root with less effort.
To use the weeder the V shaped blade is inserted at the base of the visible plant, and the plant is broken from the root with a sharp downward thrust of the handle creating an upward thrust of the plant material broken from the root. I remove the dandelion plants one by one, put them into a bucket and pour into a garbage bag. I find open flowers do tend to continue to mature into seed even after the plant is removed from the ground, I learned the hard way that leaving a single flowering head on the ground produces more seeds and more work.
Designed much as is it's shorter cousin; the long handle weeder means less bending and stooping. Ames True Temper Long Handled Dandelion Weeder with a blade shape intended to help purge the yard of robust dandelion weeds features a hardwood handle for extra durability and power. Dandelions are pervasive, dedicated beasts well able to thrive in clay, loam, fertile and miserable soils where little else will grow. While I have not broken my longer handle it is reassuring to know a replacement handle is available should replacement be needed.
This Ames True Temper Long Handled Dandelion Weeder is one component of the Ames' procession of well designed implements for gardeners. For over a century Ames has been devoted to providing the gardening public with a level of excellence and creativity of design which has launched ATT as the industry's principal consumer centered manufacturer of hand powered grass and backyard tools. Ames tools are recognized as strong, functional and trustworthy.
Happy to recommend True Temper® Deluxe long handle Dandelion Weeder.
