Excellent DVD of uneven, violent thriller "Cruising"

byStephen_Murray Jan 18, 2012

Pros vanished locations, cast, soundtrak, cinematography, DVD features
Cons Pacino was too old for the part and too small to be left to fend_for_himself
Recommended it? Yes

I watched both the movies set in gay milieu directed by William Friedkin (born in Chicago in 1935) back to back. The 1970 screen incarnation of the Off-Broadway cast of Mart Crowley’s “Boys in the Band” was daring, though not especially controversial at the time. It was... Read full review »

Catastrophic 'Cruising'

Pros Supporting performance by Don Scardino.
Cons Everything else.
Recommended it? No

If ever there were a filmmaker ill-suited to adapt Gerald Walker’s fine 1970 novel Cruising, William Friedkin would most certainly poll near the top of the list. Here is a director who displayed in the excellent, hard-driving action pictures The French Connection and To Live and Die in L.A. a... Read full review »

Cruising - 1980

Pros great job by Pacino, dark and edgy
Cons none for me
Recommended it? Yes

Director William Friedkin wanted to make his film Cruising so realistic he scouted the underground S&M bars in NY prior to filming. In fact, most of the participants shown in the bars are the actual clientele which were hired as extras for the filming. Friedkin asked them to act as they usually do... Read full review »

A 40 year old Pacino plays a late twentysomething

Pros Interesting premise
Cons Feels awkward, Pacino's stiff performance, may offend many
Recommended it? No

Cruising is a rather curious movie. One that doesn't so much feature cliches, which it does but a movie in the sense that some of it works and some of it doesn't. Is it fantastic? Not really. Great? Not really. Good? Um, not really. If anything, it's really an average movie but not one so much as... Read full review »

Pros Suspense , Pacino and Sorvino deliver gripping performances
Cons Portrays our bigoted stereotypes about gays. The ambiguous ending
Recommended it? Yes

William FriedKing's "Cruising" is the movie Al Pacino doesnt want to talk about. Initially released to some harsh criticism by the gay community and largely forgotten, the movie has been found a new following by new cult fans on home video. It has gathered once again a new audience albeit with the... Read full review »

Pros NONE
Cons Gays shown as vile, and disgusting; pointless sex and violence, everything else.
Recommended it? No

How can a film with such big names behind it, be so excruciatingly offensive? We're talking William (THE EXORCIST) Friedkin, Al Pacino and Paul Sorvino. And yet CRUISING still manages to be horrible.

The plot itself, which is just a thin excuse for blood, is horrible: A cop is called on to... Read full review »
