Step 2& Mailbox Plus (533000)

Cons
I can't think of any
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
An attractive mail receptacle which can withstand harsh elements and has rear and front access.
My oldest daughter, melissasrn (Melissa), bought our first Step2& Mailbox Plus several years ago for Christmas. Until then, we'd been using the good old black, or silver, metal boxes which did, at times, rust or leak. It was a nice gift and I was very happy with it.
For years, it did a great job keeping our mail safe, dry, and easy to access. There were 2 doors on it -- one in front and one in back. Easy to grab your mail and easy to put mail in the box for the mail lady. Sometimes, if I was out mowing, I'd ride on the mower to get my mail and ride back to the house where I'd put it up.
There's also a slot below the box for my newspaper but it isn't always used. The paper lady was lazy so odds were, it would land in the road, or in the ditch. I'd complain and things would be fine for awhile but then the lazy bone returned and back to the road and ditch we went. Years later, that lazy bone is still prevalent. You can also access your paper via the back side by lifting the flap. Sigh. Someday we may have a new paper lady who doesn't have a lazy bone!
There was enough room in the box to mail small packages or items in manila envelopes. Our mail lady is super good about taking packages, leaving stamps, putting boxes in the garage if they were too large, and just doing anything else she could for people on her route.
I had that plastic box for years and the color never faded or dimmed. My son-in-law and son cemented it in the ground at the end of my drive-way and it survived a tornado, high winds, hot sun, cold winters, and hail.
It did not survive a car plowing into it and ripping it into pieces.
Over two months ago, in the early morning hours, a very young man came barrelling down my state road, drunk as a skunk, hit the sign welcoming him to my small town, flipped his car, went airborne, and destroyed my Step 2& Mailbox Plus.
I slept through the whole incident. I slept through cops, the rescue squad, and ambulance. Didn't hear a thing!
In the morning, the massacre was noticed and Tennessee Highway Patrol called to find out what happened. We obtained a copy of the accident and found out who was involved in the wreck and read about his intoxication. As it turns out, he was an old student of mine when I was substitute teaching and remembered me. I only remembered his last name and nothing about him.
He was in the hospital with a broken back so his brother stopped by to say they would replace the mailbox, smooth the ruts in our front yard, and pick up the glass. If I was satisfied with the results, points would not be added to his driver's license. On the accident report, he had three other DUI's.
I told him I wanted the same kind of mailbox. It had been a gift so replace it with the same thing. He agreed.
For over 2 weeks we waited on him, or his family, to replace the box. Finally, it was replaced and we have a new Step2& Mailbox Plus. The young man wore a back brace when he installed the new box but still did a good job. He also smoothed the ruts out as well as he could (I did the rest) but didn't bother to pick the glass up (I did). Really, I was mostly glad to have the box replaced and was happy no one died.
He put even put the numbers on my box for the mail lady to see.
My new Step2 & Mailbox Plus is proving to be just as hardy as my old one, A couple of weeks ago, Nashville flooded. We had water every where and homes, property and lives were lost. I was lucky and only had 2-3 inches of water in my basement. My Step2 & Mailbox Plus survived strong winds and sheets of rain pounding down on everything.
My mail lady loves these boxes as it makes entrance easier and she can leave small packages and not worry about them getting wet. My old plastic box didn't leak nor does this one. If it was going to leak, it would have during the flood.
Dimensions: 51.00 H 12.50 W 23.25 D
Weight: 20.00 lbs
A lot of people where I live have these boxes as they look attractive, don't leak, don't fade and are well constructed. Also, they're much safer than some boxes as they have dual access. There's no need to be on the highway to retrieve mail - open the back door and get it.
I never had any trouble with the flag, or doors, on my old box nor have I had trouble with the new one.
I've very pleased with it.
